From Main Street to Haiti: Oxfam Omagh announces day of music in aid of Haiti

On Saturday February 6th, Omagh will echo to the sound of rock bands, pop acts and country stars, all in support of Oxfam Ireland’s Emergency Aid Appeal for the people of Haiti.

There will be a raised stage in Main Street’s covered street area with featured bands from 1pm to 6pm including Left Hand Drive, with many more to be confirmed nearer the date. This event was made possible with the kind permission of local businessman and proprietor of Main Street, Mr Michael McElroy.

The Main Street entertainment is followed by an evening benefit concert from 9.00pm till late at The Weigh Inn, Kevlin Road, Omagh. Artists performing will include Mr Entertainer, John Taggart, The Ernesiders, Jazz and Swing band, Just Us, Willie McCutcheon and Brendan Magee, John Kirwan, Ray Ligget Harp man and many more. Thanks are due to Mr Ignatius Donnelly for his support of this event.

Event coordinator Mr Eugene Floyd, who has a long association with Oxfam in Omagh, stated that he was compelled to respond to help the people of Haiti after seeing the harrowing images on television of the suffering and anguish of Haiti’s men, women and children. As many as 200,000 people may have been killed with three million affected in some way as the quake destroyed homes, shattered livelihoods and wiped out vital services.

Noel McCarter, Manager of Oxfam Ireland’s Omagh shop, said: “I would like to sincerely thank Eugene Floyd on behalf of Oxfam for the commitment and enthusiasm that he has put into organising this event.  I would also like to express sincere gratitude to all the bands and artists who at such short notice have agreed to perform for free on the day, and to Mr McElroy for his input and the use of his property and equipment.”

“Oxfam Ireland has received an unprecedented number of donations for our Emergency appeal in response to the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti.

“Oxfam was on the ground when the quake occurred and we were in a position to start working immediately. Oxfam has a 200-strong team there providing practical assistance on the ground, including clean water, shelter and sanitation. Oxfam has been in Haiti for over 30 years and we will remain there to assist the survivors of this catastrophic earthquake until our job is done.

“We urge the public to continue their generosity by supporting what will be a fantastic day of music in Omagh and show their appreciation to the local acts and organisers.  People can donate to the appeal on the day at Main Street, at the Oxfam shop at 46-48 Market Street, online at www.oxfamireland.org/donate or by calling 0800 0 30 40 55.”
